Cardiff West Liberal Democrats

Standing up for our area

Cardiff West is a constituency that, from 2007, falls completely within the limits of Cardiff Council. The constituency is diverse in both demogragphy and landscape. It includes the wards of Canton, Riverside, Caerau, Fairwater, Llandaff, Radyr, Ely, Creigau and Pentyrch.

The Liberal Democrats have minority control of Cardiff Council, having made substantial gains in the 2004 local elections, including doubling our number of Councillors in Cardiff West and gaining the second highest number of votes in our area.

In the 2003 Welsh Assembly elections, hardworking Caerau Councillor, Jacqui Gasson added 5% to the Welsh Lib Dem vote. In 2005, Alison Goldsworthy recorded the best result for the party since 1987, forcing Labour's victor Kevin Brennan to admit that his party had lost votes to the Lib Dem's. The local newspaper called the Lib Dem result a 'shock impact'. The Conservatives have no Councillors in Cardiff West and Plaid Cymru regularly trail in fourth. The Liberal Democrats are the clear challengers to Labour in Cardiff West.
